Remember Texas Senate House Bill 1403 (2001) allows undocumented students from high schools, or those who have a GED, lived in Texas for a least 3 years, completed an application for admission at a two year or four year college, and signed an affidavit stating they will seek residency as soon as they are eligible, allows them to pay in-state tuition.

I loved your program in Univision and hope you can continue your successful journey serving as an icon of inspiration to many Hispanic who need a higher level of awareness about their education. I am a vivid example of your words. I have struggled through live without a college education making the best use of my time in sales. As a real estate broker, I am now a victim of a business that does not produce its basic fix cost expenses and without a formal degree I cannot find a well-paid job to sustain an equivalent lifestyle. I also believe when we do receive an education, the primary source of our investment is within us. I am now nearly completing my Bachelors in business, and I am getting prepared to attend to law school. There is no doubt in my mind that all things being equal, he who has the most education in life will win. If yu ever want to use a random sample individual and! measure the person's success before and after a formal education I probably will be a good candidate. Arriving to my mid forties, my most valuable reward for striving to achieve an adequate academic education has been the example I exhibit to both of my children. They now know the significant importance not just of an academic education, but also, the importance of performing to one's maximum abilities to stand-out among other graduates who may not have performed as well. I once read a quote that changed my life from Erich Fromm who stated, mans [and woman] main task in life is to give birth to himself, to become who he potentially is. Part of that journey to become who we potentially are is education! Thanks for your kind mission; I am sure what you do must add a significant level of intrinsic reward t your life!

Nelson, yes there are many organizations that offer scholarships! The internet is your best research tool. Use google.com or yahoo.com and type in phrases like "scholarhips for master programs". Make sure to also look for scholarships for your specific program, for example "scholarships for master programs in education". I would also recommend that you look for fellowships that will cover your educational costs.
Finally, check our our "Resources" page and scroll down to "Scholarships and Financial Aid". Many of the listed organizations have scholarships for graduate students. Good luck!

Hi Alan, we are happy this website has been of help to you! I would suggest that you begin looking for scholarships to help finance your education. MALDEF offers scholarships to students without documents. Please visit www.maldef.org for a list of scholarships or call (213) 629-2512. You should also consider talking to the admissions office of UCCS to see if it is possible to transfer over some of the credits that you took in Mexico. They may be accepted if you have the proper documentation. In regards to your English, the university may have you take a test to see if you qualify. If you feel that you need more practice, then look into taking English courses until you are better prepared!
Buena suerte!

Thank you for reaching out to Latinos In College! I would highly advise you to check out financial aid resources (scholarships, grants, etc.) as you are approaching the end of your high school studies, as well as looking into the colleges/universities you want to attend. Go online and do a simple search into these areas, as there is a lot of information out there.

Hola Margarita,

Gracias.

Hola Paulina,
You should consider studying English with some tapes that you can carry around with you. Check this link: http://barronseduc.com/foreign-languages-english-for-spanish-speakers.html
Also, check courses online that you could take from anywhere. From www.berlitz.us look at this link for their virtual language courses: http://www.berlitz.us/Programs-Services/Personal-Interest/Online-Instruction/Berlitz-Virtual-Classroom/87/

Mariela

Hola Gabriela,
Try to apply to as many small scholarships as possible because less people apply to those. Also, have you filled out the FAFSA to see how much money you can get in the form of a Pell grant?
In addition, find out from your parents´ jobs if they offer scholarships, and from your church and other organizations you are involved with. And visit the Financial Aid office at the University you want to attend and ask them what scholarships they have available.
Visit our "Resources" section and look at the "Scholarships and Financial Aid" for many search engines that specialize in Latinos.
You have a great GPA and you should be able to find more scholarships. Be persistent and don´t give up!
Saludos,
Mariela

Hola a Roberto, Javier y Vanessa,

Good Evening, I also saw you on "Al Punto" and I found your information very helpful. But was wondering what else I need to do to get more money for college by the government. I have applied to many scholarships and I haven´t received many "Congratulations" letters. I have a 3.4 GPA, I coach soccer, and I´m involved in my school and church. I´m getting a little nervous and worried. I plan to go straight to a university, and I have my hopes up for Texas Tech University. Thank you for your time.

Hola Yasleny,
Please visit the finacial aid office at the universities you´d like to attend and find out what help they have for students like you. There are many scholarships for nursing students and some schools are even helping to pay the loans of students who go into public service or who take the challenge of working in underserved areas. Also, talk to the National Association of Hispanic Nurses www.thehispanicnurses.org and get guidance from them.
Saludos,
Mariela

Mariela,
I saw you on "Al Punto" and I found your information to be extremely helpful. However, I am wondering if you have any information for someone in my situation. I graduated last year with a Bachelors in Business Administraton and I have decided to do a career change and become a Registered Nurse; but I have been told that because I already have a Bachelors the government will not give any more grants and I was told I will have to take more loans out to pay to become a RN. Is there any other sources that you know of that could help me pay for my nursing classes considering I already have a degree?

I am a college student at NYU. I decided to go back to school and earn a degree. Although it is very expensive I believe that it is worth it. I work full time and attend college part time so I´m not sure what kind of financial aid is available for part time college students since as of now what I´m getting seems not enough! I´m so proud of myself as I would be the first in my family to attend college! Originally from Tx, Mexican parents!
Please advice!!
Thank you!

Thank you Sgt. Perez for your encouragement to Latino students. I´m glad you brought up the path you took and how hard it was. I believe serving this country is the most honorable thing someone can do and I thank you for that.
I also believe our students need to learn about all their options so they can make the right decisions.
I hope you finish your degree soon. It will continue to open lots of doors for you!

I would like to start my comment by quoting a lyric from a song by an artist by the name of N.O.R.E. It comes from the song, Reggaeton Latino: "If you proud to be Latino, stand the ***** !" And that´s how I feel every morning before I get out of bed. I was fortunate to have been able to attend college right after high school. For some, it isn´t that simple. However, after a few semesters, I opted to join the military & take advantage of the G.I.Bill. It took me longer to get my degree, but I learned a lot along the way. Cliche as it may sound, things do happen for a reason. And I still haven´t received my bachelor´s, but seeing other Latinos in my family with their degrees pushes me to strive for that goal. Yes, I am older now, but I believe its never too late to go back. And I intend to. God Bless & Be careful...

I am finishing my Masters at the University of Illinois. Over the years here at college and as a Graduate COunselor, I have noticed that students do not have to be geniuses to succeed. Smart kids come to college all the time and fail. You have to have 2 VERY IMPORTANT characteristics: good work ethic and determination to do what you need to do. We need more latinos in here doing what they should do and visit those resources that are there to help you!

Hola Mariela - What a great website.
After my interview for your book, I actually enrolled back in college making me a "Latina in College" again. Going back to school after a ten year break is proving to be challenging. However, just from scanning through this site, I can see there are many resources I will be able to utilize to help guide my journey.
Thanks for your efforts in helping to pave a better path for us Mariela.
Te quiero mucho. Ciao.
