Summer has a different meaning to everyone. To some it is the time to party, relax and not worry about school. To others it is the only time they have off school to work full time and make money. There are even some of us, like me, who treat the summer as they would any other semester and take courses! Summer courses are usually much more intense than regular courses because they are broken down into 8 week sections. For the most part classes meet every day and attendance is crucial. For some this can be overwhelming and pretty much unrealistic. Good news guys, if you search hard enough you can find awesome online courses, 15 week summer courses that aren´t as intense and awesome internships to give you credit and experience. For example, Empire State College a SUNY school offers 4 credit online courses to get the most out of your summer! They are hard to come by but trust me they are out there and it is up to us to find them and compose our ideal schedule to meet our individual needs. Of course most of us want some type of vacation and some type of financial stability. Its great to balance things out but we all have to stay on our toes this summer. We are not in high school anymore, I repeat we are not In high school anymore! Every day we take more steps toward becoming professionals and with all this competition we need to take this seriously. Short term goals need to be met, long term goals need to be set and all of us need to start thinking, if you haven´t already, like adults. We can´t go out every day and every night. At some point everything needs structure. For those of us who are feeling a little stressed out this summer take time out to focus on that. Your emotional stability is so important during these stages of life and if you ignore it, it will begin to interfere with your dreams. Keep trying hard, don´t get side tracked. I wish everyone the best this summer!

Follow your dreams

The end of the school year is steadily approaching and here in New York the first signs of summer heat are surfacing. The nice weather is almost contagious and many students are finding themselves drifting away to barbecue land. We have a lot to celebrate but we also have a lot of work to finish. This year let´s not let the sun play tricks on us! Let´s wake up earlier so we can get more out of our day. Recently, well it is more like a seasonally recurring tradition, I have been waking up two hours ahead of schedule to go hiking. The climb gets my blood flowing and when I reach the top it´s almost as if I´m in an elevated mind state. I stay there for a few minutes, thinking about the tasks I have ahead of me that day. I visualize myself tackling them one by one just as I did the mountain. Before I descend I look out and see the bright lights of New York City. The view encompasses so much land that I couldn´t see from the ground level. This morning hike, which takes me no more than forty five minutes, sets the pace for my day. It reminds me that you can´t see all of your options if you don´t keep climbing. Dreams are meant to be followed and goals are meant to be met. We all have to believe in ourselves find something that we are truly passionate about and pursue a career that will allow us to love what we do. I wish everyone the best of luck. Ace your finals, find that coveted job you have been waiting for and don´t be afraid to change as time is constantly changing. There is a lot of competition out there and it is up to us to stand out.
The importance of a cover letter in securing an internship
Posted:04/20/2009
As the spring semester comes to a close some of us are still scrambling to secure a summer 2009 internship. In today´s economy even unpaid internships have become hard to find due to the influx of applicants. It now takes more than a simple email or a decent resume to get the internship you desire. After meeting with the career development center at my college I was able to enhance my cover letter, resume and interview skills to compete in this challenging market.
The cover letter is the first thing that employers look at and if it isn´t sharp it may very well be the last. (In his recent blog, Bob Roth gives some great advice, so check it out!) The cover letter is the place to show your individuality, to state your interest in the field and the skills you could bring to the company. Punctuation and spelling are also imperative in having a successful cover letter. I have attached a sample cover letter that I used to apply for an internship at a radio station. I never use the same cover letter twice because each company is different and requires different skills and interests.

Dear (Contact),
My name is Amanda Longo and I am a senior at SUNY Purchase College double majoring in Communication/Media studies and Legal Studies. Pursuant to the completion of my degrees, I have been given the opportunity to participate in a Summer 2009 Internship to gain more knowledge in my desired field of study.
I have long dreamed of having a career in the music industry and I feel that if possible, an apprenticeship with your business would give me a strong foundation to build that career upon.
As a Communication/Media Studies major I have developed strong networking, marketing and interpersonal skills. Through my internships as the editor of www.latinosincollege.com and N.E.V.A records I was able to showcase my writing abilities while I learned how to navigate the digital world and communicate effectively at a national level.
My experience as a legal secretary and my completed courses in legal studies have allowed me to familiarize myself with Arts and Entertainment law in addition to the inner workings of the American legal system. With the opportunity to work alongside professionals in this field I plan to use my talents and integrity to ensure a mutually beneficial internship.
I am particularly interested in the part time promotional assistant and street team positions. I have enclosed my resume, which provides additional information regarding my skills and experience. I hope to arrange an interview with you at your earliest convenience.
I can be reached both day and night at (Your Phone #).
Thank you very much for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

Puedes obtener mucha informacion en mi libro: "Latinos in College: Your Guide to Success". En el "Home" page tienes un link para comprarlo en Amazon.com Saludos, Mariela

Spring Break
Posted:03/16/2009
Midterm Chaos is finally over and Spring Break is here! Whether you are staying on campus and working, going back home to visit family or broadening your horizons on an exciting trip we all can appreciate the time off. It feels good not having to set your alarm clock for that early morning class and being able to attend social events without worrying about a research paper. Here in New York the sun is getting brighter everyday and a breeze of familiar anticipation has swept over us. Spring break is the week that separates the last stretch of the entire academic year. For some of us it may be our last college vacation before graduation. If you have any outstanding assignments or if your class average is just not where you want it to be, now would be a great time to catch up. Email your professors and see if there is any option for extra credit and complete the task now that you have some free time. There has always been a ton of partying and sponsored events associated with spring break. From Cancun to South Beach many popular vacation spots cater to the swarm of college kids looking to take a break from their studies and enjoy the beauty of youth. If you are going on a trip with friends it is always important to remember a few golden rules. The first one being KNOW YOUR LIMITS, you can have a great time within legal limitations. Secondly DONT BE A BYSTANDER, if you see something going on that could be potentially dangerous lend a helping hand; you would want people to do the same for you. Lastly, BE SAFE, you have too much of your life ahead of you to put yourself in danger. I personally am going to Montreal, Canada for the weekend with a few friends. I plan on visiting the famous Biodome, enjoying French cuisine and taking in the beauty of the city. It is a six-hour drive from my house in New York, making it an extremely convenient and affordable trip. Wherever this Spring Break takes you remember to be responsible. We all have bright futures ahead of us and we should never loose sight of that. Enjoy the time off while it lasts!
Letisha, I know where you are coming from this is a problem that all of us have to go through. It´s all up to you to get comfortable with yourself. If you don´t drink all the time time and your secure enough about who you are your friends will truly respect that. Being confident and responsible is an admirable quality you have a good head on your shoulders! -Amanda

College students are notoriously broke
Posted:03/01/2009
College students are notoriously broke. Aside from them spending most of there time in class, studying or at un-paid internships most jobs that are available for undergrads are usually low paying gigs. This is in part why it is so important for us to continue our education and gain access to high paying careers. It can be tough juggling everything at once especially considering all of the social distractions that college life generates. The best advice I can give is to stay busy. The more you have on your agenda the less likely you are to be sucked into the crowd of people who dont take college seriously. At the same time, time management is essential. Actually let me re-phrase that because it would be utterly impossible for anyone to manage time, as time is always changing and can never be stopped or delayed. In reality it is self-management that is truly essential to success. I am currently in the process of prioritizing my many extra curricular activities because it has recently dawned on me that I might be doing just a little too much. If I want to be my best at everything I do then I must sit back and pick the things I really love and focus on them. Other wise As will turn to Bs and energy will start to diminish into yawns of exhaustion. It is so interesting to note the way the human body adapts so quickly to any changes you subject it to. We should not fear change because we know that within a few days our body will get with the program and everything will become routine. It is like starting a new work out. The first day youre extremely out of breathe, the second day you are sore but the work out seems a little easier and the third day is substantially more approachable. Every year we should take steps closer to finding out what it is we really want to do in life. Every day we should set new goals to keep ourselves on track. I personally like to set short term and long term goals because it allows me to better understand my opportunity. It is important that we all understand that with hard work everything is possible!
Suerte! Mariela

Winter Break
Posted:01/16/2009
Winter break is almost over if you havent gotten the memo yet. Im sure all of you are just getting used to the relief of not having to attend classes but Spring 2009 semester is right around the corner.
With that being said, it is important for all us to spend the next week preparing ourselves for our classes. Books need to be bought, schedules need to be adjusted and for those who are little more last minute now is probably your last chance to register for courses.
I dont know what it is about the last week of break but its almost miniscent of the last week of summer when I was in high school. Your excited to see all of your friends, find out what everyone did for the holidays and just get back into that vibe of college companionship. Of course we are all older now and not as self-absorbed in back to school outfits and other superficial connotations associated with the whole back to school thing, but never the ess I can honestly say Im still just as excited. For those of you that dorm far away from your hometown make sure to pend time with your family these last few days; as much as you dont realize it you all will miss each other.
If youre transferring to a new college this semester get ready to completely immerse yourself in your new environment. Dont get discouraged, as it is mid-semester and not the typical time that students normally transfer. Join some clubs, go to events and be as out going as possible. If youre going to study abroad this semester, or starting a new internship, be open to experience new things and really push yourself.
Whatever Spring 2009 has in store for you, I wish you the best of luck and hope you all do great. Reach for the stars!
my name is steve and im a senior going to the marines after i graduate high school. This website has given me a good outlook and i hope more people get to take a look at this site!
Finals Week
Posted:01/06/2009
"Finals week" is something every college student can't wait to finish. We know of its existence at the beginning of every semester and yet as the term comes to a close we often find ourselves unprepared, rushed and as nervous as ever.
The combination of final papers, exams and projects can be extremely overwhelming if left to the last minute. As a seasoned participant of finals week, I have come to develop a strategy , that has allowed me to complete all assignments, study for exams and manage to remain calm throughout the entire week.
First I have to stress the importance of the final. Most college teachers do not give daily homework assignments and therefore heavily rely on a student's midterm and final marks to determine their semester grade. Your course syllabus which is given out at the beginning of every semester outlines the entire course and nine out of ten times has a description of both the midterm and final assignments.
If the assignment is a paper, this gives you ample time to research and begin writing your first draft. Make sure to take your paper to your college writing center, almost every college has one, to get it commented on before turning it in. I find it easier to complete all of my final papers the week before finals, leaving the following week free to study for exams.
If your syllabus indicates the final will be an exam make sure to take very detailed notes during every class. Create a buddy system with a few of your classmates, make sure you have their email address and phone number. That way if you miss a class you can get the notes and during finals week you can study together. I find that studying with a fellow student gives you a sense of companionship and comfortability which can ease the anxiety often associated with finals week.
